Outpatient services are a critical part of planned care, but many traditional models are no longer fit for purpose. Independent providers are helping the NHS redesign how patients are assessed, reviewed and followed up, offering services that are faster, more efficient and more responsive to patient needs.

This award is for providers delivering outpatient care to NHS patients that improves flow, speeds up access or offers a better experience for patients. This could include assessment and follow up clinics in specialties such as dermatology, ophthalmology, gynaecology, MSK or chronic pain, as well as virtual review services or patient initiated follow up pathways.

Eligibility

  • Open to independent healthcare providers delivering outpatient services free at the point of care for NHS patients. Projects must show measurable impact within the past two years.

Ambition

  • Explain which part of the outpatient pathway your service improves, such as assessments, follow up or review
  • Describe how the model increases capacity, speeds up access or reduces unnecessary appointments
  • Set out how the approach aligns with NHS ambitions to modernise elective and outpatient care

Outcome

  • Provide evidence of reduced waiting times, lower non-attendance or faster diagnosis
  • Share measurable improvements in patient outcomes, flow or treatment planning
  • Include feedback from patients, referring clinicians or NHS partners on the impact of the service

Spread

  • Highlight where your model has been adopted by other teams, specialties or geographies
  • Describe any collaboration with NHS trusts, ICBs or other independent providers to extend access
  • Share tools, systems or service designs that have enabled scale or adaptation

Value

  • Show how the service reduced delays, improved flow or created additional clinical capacity
  • Provide data on time savings, reduced duplication or better use of resources
  • Include examples of how patient experience improved through more timely or convenient care

Involvement

  • Describe how the service was developed with input from clinicians, managers or operational teams
  • Highlight patient involvement in shaping access models, communication or support tools
  • Explain how you gather and respond to feedback to improve and sustain service quality
