The use of the NHS’ vast property and estates portfolio has been prominent since the publication of the Naylor report raising the prospect of releasing money for investment through selling off unused land or properties. Despite the setbacks and delays caused by Covid-19, the Conservative manifesto pledge to deliver 30 ‘new’ hospitals remains strong, and STPs and ICSs are taking a more strategic view on how to drive optimal performance from the physical infrastructure across their region.
Many NHS organisations don’t have the expertise in-house to tackle some of the issues involved in this such as maximizing the value from their existing estates or commissioning new facilities which meet the health needs of the population in the future. However, the development of the Nightingale field hospitals is testament to the fact that with outside support, rapid and radical improvements can be made to service delivery.
This award will go to an organisation which has helped the NHS make the most of its current estate or found innovative solutions to help it develop new properties – often within tight budgets. It is likely to have worked closely with NHS staff – and potentially patients – to meet the NHS’s needs within the resources available.
